Abstract

The amount of news related to the clash between Hamas and Israel has triggered
support from various parties, one of which is Indonesia. High support makes news
dissemination tools such as social media will continue to be followed, triggering addiction
and doomscrolling behaviour. This study aims to determine the relationship between social
media addiction and doomscrolling behaviour. This study uses a descriptive quantitative
approach. The sample of this study were people who were updated with Palestinian news, and
used social media at least 3 hours a day, totalling 173 participants who met the criteria. The
measuring instrument used is an adaptation of the Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS)
which has 41 items and Propensity To Doomscrolling (PTS) which has 7 items. The results
showed that many participants experienced social media addiction and doomscrolling. In
addition, the cause of supporting Palestine is due to the condition of Palestine and religion,
the activities carried out as a form of support are looking for the latest information and
spreading it on social media. The implication of this study is that it is necessary to determine
the priorities that want to be done and reduce unnatural accounts or posts on social media.
