Abstract
Human development has interconnected stages or periods that can affect one period of
development to another. Adverse childhood experience is an experience that becomes a source of
acute stress and trauma experienced by individuals during childhood, especially during the early
18 years of life, which in some literature can increase the likelihood of behavioral disorders both
internalizing and externalizing problems. This study aimed to determine the role of adverse
childhood experiences on internalizing and externalizing problems. This study used a
quantitative correlational approach. The participants of this study were selected using a cluster
random sampling technique. The data analysis of this study used simple linear regression
analysis. The results indicated that there was a significant positive effect between adverse
childhood experience on internalizing problems and externalizing problems (β = 0.287; p<0.05 and
= 0.280; p<0.05). Adverse childhood experiences in adolescents positively contribute 8.2% to
internalizing problems and 7.8% to externalizing problems.
