Abstract
Communication plays a crucial role in shaping one's culture. Research on gender and communication tends to focus on male masculinity, while studies on women's expressions of masculinity through communication remain limited. The Malang 2 Training Club community, which emphasizes physical training regardless of gender, becomes the object of study due to the assumption that its female members may exhibit expressions of masculinity, particularly in communication aspects. This study aims to identify forms of masculine expression through the communication behavior of female members in the Malang 2 Training Club community.
This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The analysis technique uses Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis, which includes data collection, reduction, analysis, and verification with source triangulation, utilizing Deborah David and Robert Brannon's theory of masculinity.
The results show that female members of the Malang 2 Training Club (M2TC) community express masculinity in their communication in accordance with David and Brannon's theory. They avoid feminine traits by using assertive and straightforward language, strive to build status through dominance in discussions and decision-making, demonstrate emotional stability in various situations, and display courage in facing challenges and expressing opinions. Although the intensity of expression varies among individuals, these patterns are consistent across research subjects.
