Abstract

The inherent competition among English premier league teams also contributes to the formation of social identity among supporters, often leading to unethical emotions towards fans of other teams, one of which is schadenfreude. This study aims to examine the influence of social identity on schadenfreude among supporters of English premier league teams. The research method employed is a quantitative correlational method. Sampling was done using accidental sampling technique with a sample size of 273 participants who are Indonesian citizens, aged 18-40 years, and support a premier league team. The measurement tools used include the Schadenfreude Scale developed based on aspects proposed by Baren (2017), and the Team Identification Scale developed by Dimmock & Grove (2006), which have been validated for validity and reliability. The results of simple linear regression analysis show that social identity significantly influences schadenfreude (F = 37.987; p = 0.000 < 0.05). Social identity has a weak effect of 12.3%, and the higher the social identity, the higher the schadenfreude (B = +0.764). This research shows that there is an influence of social identity on schadenfreude among Premier League football supporters.
