Abstract
Separated families often present complex dynamics in the quality of interpersonal communication between fathers and children. Communication dynamics that occur due to changes or differences in message delivery and communication methods. This research aims to define the quality of interpersonal communication between fathers and children in separated families and explain it descriptively in the context of families experiencing divorce. The existence of intense communication will make interpersonal communication between father and child honest and open. This research uses a qualitative study research method with a descriptive approach to understand individual experiences in family communication.
The research results show that the quality of communication is characterized by frequency and consistency of interaction, openness, honesty, empathy, understanding and emotional support between father and child. Interpersonal communication between fathers and children in separated families will be of high quality if fathers and children can interact regularly face-to-face or through communication means, this interaction can be done verbally or non-verbally. Physical distance is the main influence in establishing quality communication. The closer and more often you communicate, the more quality interpersonal communication between father and child will be.
In this case, quality interpersonal communication is evident in fathers, sons and daughters living together. Meanwhile, poor quality interpersonal communication occurs in fathers and daughters and sons who do not live together because of the difference in distance between places of residence so that they cannot communicate regularly and intensely. These findings indicate the importance of the father's role in maintaining good communication with children even in conditions where the family is not intact, as well as the need for efforts to support the quality of communication in separated families.
