Abstract
Watersheds have an important role in the sustainability of water resources, facing challenges such as pollution and unintegrated management. The Brantas River, particularly the Upper Brantas sub-watershed, is a significant water source in East Java that is increasingly threatened by pollution from household waste. This research aims to evaluate the sustainability index of the Upper Brantas Subwatershed through a case study in Batu City, East Java, using the watershed sustainability index method developed by Chaves and Alipaz (2007). Data were collected from various sources between 2018-2022, including water quality, Human Development Index (HDI), natural vegetation cover analysis, and questionnaires. The results indicated a sustainability index value of 0.54, categorized as moderate. This finding highlights the need for further actions to enhance sustainability, such as protecting water resources, constructing infiltration ponds, regulating water use, and preserving protected forests. Effective collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organizations, local communities, academics, and the private sector is essential. With increased awareness, support from all stakeholders, and the implementation of targeted strategies, the sustainability of the Upper Brantas Subwatershed can be improved for the long-term benefit of both society and the environment.
