Abstract
In the context of higher education, interpersonal communication competence plays a crucial role in helping students adapt to a diverse and dynamic academic environment. The ability to communicate well plays an important role in academic achievement, social interaction and overall self-development. This study uses Rubin and Martin's theory of communication competence, which divides communication competence into ten dimensions: self-disclosure, empathy, social relaxation, assertiveness, altercentrism, interaction management, expressiveness, supportiveness, immediacy, and environmental control. Rubin and Martin then developed an interpersonal communication competence scale that is used to measure the level of interpersonal communication competence.
This research was conducted using a quantitative approach. In this study, researchers used descriptive quantitative type. Descriptive research is a type of research that analyzes data systematically. The basis of research used in this research is using survey research. The results of the study state that there are dominant and non-dominant factors that shape the interpersonal communication competence of overseas students in adapting to the college environment. Based on the findings and discussion, the level of communication competence of overseas students is in the high and medium range, namely 45% high and 51% medium. Of the ten dimensions, there are dimensions that become dominant and non-dominant factors that shape students' communication competence in adapting to the college environment so that prospective students can improve their communication competence on dominant factors as the key to success in adapting to the college environment and still pay attention to non-dominant factors to continue to be developed as a support for other factors.
