Abstract

This study aims to determine what difficulties students experience in learning vocabulary. Because in learning English, having a lot of vocabulary is very important and good. By using some vocabulary, students will be able to use it in writing and speaking, especially to learn English. English is the second language they learn, students often have to memorize the vocabulary they receive. Forgetting the meaning of the vocabulary they have received. They may forget the meaning because they have memorized too much vocabulary. Then the lack of interest in learning English is also one of the difficulties experienced by students in learning vocabulary. So the role of the teacher here is also important in the student learning process. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. Using qualitative descriptive research because the research design is more flexible and developing, data will be investigated from several existing phenomena and arranged naturally, emphasizing meaning, analyzing data using words descriptively and reflectively rather than numbers and statistics.

This data was obtained by researchers through a questionnaire. Data were collected from 64 7th grade students of SMP Negeri 18 Malang. The results are that there are various difficulties experienced by 7th grade students, such as difficulty pronouncing vocabulary, interpreting vocabulary and spelling vocabulary. This study implies that teachers can create good learning media for students.
