Abstract

This study aims to describe the written mathematical communication abilities of X-grade students with Field Dependence (FD) and Field Independence (FI) cognitive styles in the 2023/2024 academic year. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with subjects from various schools. Data were collected through the GEFT test and written tests, and analyzed using triangulation techniques. The results indicate that students with a FD cognitive style have written mathematical communication skills at level 2 (sufficiently good category), facing difficulties in expressing mathematical ideas in graphical form, identifying initial ideas, and using mathematical symbols correctly. However, they are able to interpret and elaborate mathematical ideas accurately, even though their methods tend to be less systematic. On the other hand, students with an FI cognitive style demonstrate skills at level 3 (good category), capable of expressing mathematical ideas in graphical form effectively, identifying initial ideas using their own language, and writing mathematical symbols and notations accurately and according to the applicable rules. This study indicates a significant difference in mathematical communication abilities between the two cognitive styles.
