Abstract

Becoming a major force in the fight against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States, Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013. The acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of a black man named Trayvon Martin in 2012 was the trigger for the formation of this social movement by several people such as Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. This research examines the impact of George Floyd's death on the rise of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Through literature review and media analysis, this research examines how the killing of Floyd by Minneapolis police in May 2020 sparked a national movement against police brutality and systemic racism. This research identifies the influences that the death of George Floyd has had on the re-emergence of Black Lives Matter in the United States. This study also highlights the role of the police and political leadership in shaping public perception of the movement. The findings show that Floyd's death has rekindled the urgent need for racial justice that continues to shape the political and social outlook of the United States.
