Abstract

Self-esteem in adolescents is an important aspect for the formation of personality, self-concept, decision making, interpersonal relationships, or the future. If adolescents do not have positive self-esteem, it will lead to a sense of insecurity, failure, unhappiness, and lack of pride, which has an impact on their academic performance and can cause anxiety. In Indonesia, children are educated with violence by their parents or guardians, especially emotional violence is a form of violence where the behaviour is not realized by parents and can reduce self-esteem. This study aims to determine the effect of emotional violence by parents on the self-esteem of high school adolescents. This type of research is a quantitative correlational method. The data that has been obtained is analyzed using the simple linear regression method. The sampling technique used accidental sampling, with the number obtained as many as 232 adolescents aged 16-19 years, attending school, domiciled in Malang, and had experienced 1-2 forms of emotional violence. The scales used were The Rosenberg Self-esteem (RSS) scale, and the Emotional Abuse Questionnaire (EAQ). The results showed that there was no significant influence between emotional violence by parents on adolescent self-esteem, which means that emotional violence by parents has no influence on the high and low self-esteem of adolescents.
