Abstract
Excessive social media use can lead to various risks such as anxiety, sleep disorders, depression, eating disorders, body image, and so on. Currently, many social media users are
in early adulthood. The high intensity of social media use can reach seven to nine hours per day. One of the influencing factors is self-control. Self-control is a person's ability to restrain himself, desire, urge or change negative behavior towards positive behavior when faced with a temptation. Individuals with high self-control will experience low intensity of social media use. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of self-control on the intensity of social media use in early adulthood. The approach used in is quantitative correlation with accidental sampling technique. The number of research subjects was 210 early adults. The instrument used to measure self-control is the Self-Control Scale (SCS) scale while the instrument used to measure the intensity of social media use is an adapted scale based on aspects of the intensity of social media use. The data analysis technique used simple linear regression. The results showed that there is an influence of self-control on the intensity of social media use in early adulthood (p<0.05). The higher the self-control, the lower the intensity of social media use, and
vice versa, the lower the self-control, the higher the intensity of social media use.
