Abstract

This study aims at describing teacher’s speaking technique based Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) used by the teachers at Intensive English Course (IEC) Malang 2. This thesis also described that teaching English to Young Learners is different from teaching English for the adolescence. The various techniques and enjoyable situation are the most important things for classroom activity. This study presented speaking teaching technique alternative, which was based on CLT’s features such as communicative exercises and students’ communicative competence. So, the students’ exploration is a must for the CLT class. The combination between communicative exercises, various teaching and friendly teacher are necessary to create enjoyable learning atmosphere. When students do not enjoy with the class atmosphere, they will have no great hesitation in joining the class. The technique in this research focused on message-oriented not grammar-transferred. A descriptive qualitative research was used as the design of the study, it was used to find out the data and analyze it as well. The subjects of the study were the teachers of Intensive English Course (IEC) Malang 2 who teaches in Reach Out (RO) class. The data were obtained through observing the classroom activity and conducting interview with the teachers. The data findings were analyzed based on the related theory and described descriptively. The result of this study showed that CLT was not implemented perfectly as the teacher’s speaking teaching technique, the teacher did not fulfill all the CLT’s features. Teachers used role-play and game as teachers’ speaking technique to improve students’ speaking skill but they did not use authentic material as the main material or supported material. Taking into account children’s characteristics, such as like playing, easy remember and easy to forget, the writer suggests that the English for Young Learners’ teachers have to use more teaching media in pre-teaching session to guide students’ mindset. Therefore, the students will not think something in abstract. They will experience the real concept.
