Abstract

Speaking means a process of how to communicate, in which people share thought, ideas, and feeling with others in understandable ways. English department, as one of the departments of University of Muhammadiyah Malang has a goal to assist the students to be able to master all of the English skills in many ways, and one of those ways was English day, which is held twice a week on Wednesday and Friday. In fact, there were still many speaking problems appearing during English day among the students. The purpose of this study was to find out the problems faced by the students of English Department in speaking English on English Day, and how they cope with those problems. In the present study, the researcher used descriptive quantitative research as the research design. The researcher took all of the active students of English department as the population, and the sample was 10% of 834 students, they were 83 students. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire and observation. The researcher found, the problems of English department students University of Muhammadiyah Malang in using English on English day were inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, mother tongue use, desire to communicate, comprehension as well as expression, personality factor, limitation of expression and also correction of errors. To solve those problems, there were some ways used by the students to cope with. They used group works, simple language, made a careful and various choices of topic, gave the same priority in speaking English to members of group, made the target language, and also other way suggested by the students themselves, that was making English as a habit in the students’ daily communication.
