Abstract

This study was focused on the difficulties of teaching vocabulary faced by the English teacher and the causes of the difficulties of teaching vocabulary. The objective of this study is to describe the difficulties and the causes of the difficulties of teaching vocabulary. The subject of the study is one teacher of the fourth, fifth and sixth grades at elementary school. In conducting the research, the writer the used descriptive design to obtain the information related to the difficulties and the causes in teaching vocabulary faced by the English teacher at SDN 02 Yosowilangun Kidul Lumajang. The result of this study indicated that the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching vocabulary include: the material, media, teaching technique and evaluation. The cause of the difficulty concerning the material was that the material was too difficult. Besides, the cause of the difficulty concerning the media was that the school did not have any other media other than the textbook. Than the cause of the difficulty concerning teaching technique was that the English teacher used the monotonous teaching technique. And the last, the cause of the difficulty concerning the evaluation was that the students cheated and worked together in a test. Therefore, the finding of the research is the teachers who teach in elementary school need a special skill to teach vocabulary. Besides having sufficient English proficiency, the teacher has to be attractive, helpful, patient and welcome, and more creative in selecting games in the teaching learning English process. English teacher needs to be selective in applying the teaching vocabulary technique. In this case, he needs to apply the most interesting effective technique, so that the students can interested to study English, especially in vocabulary lesson.
