Education is something very important in human life. Through education many things that will be achieved by someone because through pendidikanlah humans can explore and develop the potentials that have been given by God in every human being. There are many ways that can be taken to acquire an education one of them through formal education or school. Within the scope of school students is one barometer of success of an education system. Therefore improving the quality of students become very important in teaching and learning in schools. One effort to improve the quality of students is with the holding of screening or selection of new admissions. Yet over time, not all students who pass the selection is truly excellent students as expected. One of the main causes of low student achievement is the weakness of these students' learning strategies. Most of the low academic achievement of students who do not know how good learning appropriate to their abilities. This research aims to help students learning achievement is below average classmates to improve his performance back through focus group discussions. This study included 11 subjects from class VII MtsN Kediri 2 which was taken based on the report card odd semester 2004/2005. Students who become the subject of this research is that the average value in the first half was below 6.0. The research method used was focus group discussion conducted in 4 sessions over 2 weeks. Group Discussions focused in this study is quite effective to help students who experience learning problems in finding an appropriate learning method to the problems faced. This research is to obtain conclusions about effective learning strategies as follows: group learning, memorizing strategies: understanding the meaning or significance of memorize the material, making the acronym of the first letter or syllable dihapalakan material, read something about strategy: underlines the essence of a paragraph. , makes a summary of the essence of reading, a strategy to make a note: make a summary.
