This research was aimed at studying teaching techniques of reading skill for the third year students in SMP PGRI 1 Probolinggo. This study tried to find the techniques of teaching reading, the problems and the solutions. This research was based on the fact that sometimes the teacher gets problems in applying the techniques. This research was descriptive qualitative in which the researcher tried to identify the techniques of teaching reading, the teachers’ problems, and also the alternative solutions toward the problems in teaching-learning reading skill. The subject of this research was one English teacher who taught third grade of junior high school. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation and interview. The observation was to know the techniques used by the teacher. In this case the researcher’s position was non participant observer. Interview was used to obtain the data concerning problems and solution faced by the teacher in applying the techniques. In this interview the researcher used unstructured form. The findings of this study showed that the teacher used the eclectic technique and he applied the technique in three stages, namely Pre- reading, whilst- reading and post- reading activity. In applying the technique of teaching reading, he faced some problems. First, he got a problem in pronunciations. Second problems was the class was so crowded and noisy that the teacher difficult to manage and create a good learning atmosphere. The third problem, the teacher could not implement curriculum. Fourth, the teacher could not finish the topics at that time. The last problem was the teacher could not present the materials clearly because the number of the teaching aids was limited. Therefore, to solve the problems related to the pronunciation, he learned how to pronounce words by looking up dictionaries and learned to pronounce words through listening cassette. The next, to solve the problems of big class, the teacher divided the class into groups which could help the teacher observing the reading activity effectively. To overcome the problems about curriculum he followed the training of the new curriculum with instructors. And to solve the problems concerned with the unfinished topic at that time, he gave the additional time outside the schedule of the class. The last, to overcome the problem related to the teacher could not present the materials, he tried to create the teaching aids.
