Abstract

This research based on press freedom phenomena which caused a rapid increase of press publication without professional and selective journalists recruitments. To exist in his world, press should serve various and developed information whether related with politic, economic, law, culture, or entertainment. Memo Arema Newspaper is one of them which focused at criminal action in Malang neighborhood. By describing an existed phenomena where the victim was published transparently, the news tend to out of journalism ethic code.The research used quantitative approach, where contain analysis principle applied was objectivity. The research analysis unit was criminal news headlined Memo Arema at August 1st – 31st 2007 edition with each headlines as measurement section. Categorization based on Journalism ethic code section 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8. The result showed from the total 218 violations which were done by Memo Arema Newspaper, 36% related with facts and opinion mixing and 28% related with fairness. It could be concluded that Memo Arema violated journalism ethic code section (3). For section (1), news accuration was 7% ; section (2) related with the identity of informer was 5% ; section (4) related with sadistic information was 11% and vulgar information was 3% ; section (8) related with prejudice for 10%. It could be concluded that Memo Arema violated journalism ethic code section 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8. This violation was pushed by Memo Arema’s character as “yellow newspaper” which tend to publish sensational and bombastic news to attract the reader.
