Abstract

The objective of this study is that the researcher wants to describe the technique used by the lecturer in teaching writing to the fifth semester students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study is based on the fact that writing skill is regarded as the most difficult activity than the other skills. The researcher took the fifth semester students because they had already learned the writing skills. Since teaching writing is not easy, it needs a lot of teaching experience knowledge. By using the appropriate technique, the lecturer will be successful to improve the students writing achievement. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. It is Qualitative because it described and explained the technique which was used by the lecturer in teaching writing. The instrument which was used by the researcher was observation and interview to obtain the data. The data was derived from the informant who is the English writing lecturer of the fifth semester students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The finding of this study reveals that the techniques which are used by the lecturer in teaching writing are lecturing, giving model, analyzing, outlining, students’ teacher discussion, writing exercises, students conference and students comments on their peers’ writing. Related with the previous study, it was found that some of the researcher results are similar with the finding of the previous study, such as: lecturing, exercising, and giving comments. And there are also some different findings that are: giving model, analyzing, outlining, students-teacher discussion, students’ conference and students comments on their peers’ writing. Based on the result, it was found that mostly the lecturer used the technique of lecturing, exercising and giving comments.
