Abstract
The present research is intended to seek the difficulties especially the non – linguistic difficulties in reading comprehension at MTs Nurul Ulum Gadungan Malang. This research used qualitative research design. The research population was the second year English teacher and students at MTs Nurul Ulum Gadungan Malang. To collect the data, this research used interview and questionnaire. The unstructured interview was to find out the teacher’s non – linguistic difficulties in teaching reading. Meanwhile, the open – ended questionnaires were given to the students to investigate the non – linguistic difficulties in learning reading. Either unstructured interview or open – ended questionnaires were analyzed qualitatively. The research findings showed that the teacher faced the non – linguistic difficulties in teaching reading at MTs Nurul Ulum Gadungan Malang. The non–linguistic difficulties concerned with teaching technique, time management, material selection, insufficient school facilities, and his students especially students’ attitudes, motivation, and the number of students in class. Meanwhile, the students also faced the non – linguistic difficulties in learning reading at MTs Nurul Ulum Gadungan Malang. Those difficulties dealt with the teacher’s teaching technique, time availability, material selection, and insufficient school facilities.
