Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of peer social support and emotional intelligence on loneliness in migrant students from outside Java. This research uses quantitative research methods with multiple linear regression analysis to test the research hypothesis. The loneliness variable was measured using the UCLA Loneliness Scale (version 3) research instrument and has been adapted. Peer social support variables were measured using research instruments by Cohen and Mckay; Cortona and Russel; House Schaefer, Coyne, and Lazarus and Wilss and has been adapted. The emotional intelligence variable was measured using a research instrument by Goleman and has been adapted. The sample in this study consisted of 204 migrant students from outside Java, aged 18-25 years, living in Malang, East Java. The results of data analysis show that there is a negative influence of peer social support and emotional intelligence on loneliness in migrant students. The results show that the higher the social support from peers obtained and the emotional intelligence that overseas students have, the lower the level of loneliness they experience, and vice versa on the island, the lower the social support from peers and emotional intelligence, the higher the loneliness they experience. It is known from the results of this study that peer social support and emotional intelligence influence loneliness by 51,4%, the remainder is influenced by other variables not studied.
