Abstract

Composite is a fusion of matrix and strengthener. Orientation, standard and form of strengthener are very affecting mechanic characteristic of composite. It is hope that with variation of length and volume percentage of water hyacinth fiber, it will result in optimum mechanic characteristic for composite. This study uses Length and volume percentage variations because it is suitable with basic form of water hyacinth fiber that has small diameter, long and straight. Length variations used are 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm; and volume percentage variation are 15%, 25% and 35%. The purpose of using water hyacinth fiber is because it is easy found and also has superior in growth, extraordinary withstand to germ and has good fiber strength. Polyester used is polyester Yukalac QTN 835/83 K that is easy found in market. To know the influence of length and volume percentage variations on the strength of polyester composite mechanical, the researcher uses impact test method with varians technique analysis. Based on the experiment, it shows that the best strength impact is in length variation of 15 mm with fiber volume of 25%, while the lowest srength impact is in length variation of 5 mm with fiver volume of 15%. The conclusion is the more length of fiber the bigger strength impact, meanwhile, the best volume percentage variation is in 25% of water hyacinth in polyester composite. The amount of 25% of water hyacinth fiber and 75% of matrix constitute the best composite in composite making.
