Abstract
The parent’s role in the family is very important for the student’s life, it includes the way to educate, the relationship between parents and students, and house arrangement. The parent’s roles in handle it as guiding, teaching and giving good imitating. Eventhough, in their learning, children need motivation or support from their parents. Giving motivation for children means guide them to stand-alone. This study tried to investigate the types of motivation do the parents have in motivating their children in learning English at MIN Malang I. The subject of this study was the parents of the elementary school students at the fifth grade at MIN Malang I. The data of the parent’s motivation were obtained by means of questionnaires, and to support the data, the researcher was obtained by means of observation at class. The questionnaire were distributed to the parents from September 26, 2003 to September 30, 2003, and collected from the parents from October 1, 2003 to October 3, 2003. They were analyzed by describing the types of motivation do the parents have in motivating their children in learning English. The result of this study shows that motivation is important for children. The motivations were included as intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation such as, the parents’ attitude to motivate their children, the facility that given to their children by providing some media for example, video or cassettes, text books and also pictures. And extrinsic motivation that can be gathered from their environment and from school. After analyzing and discussing the findings, the researcher suggests that motivation needs to be increased so that the parents should more active in applying more attention to their motivation toward their children in learning English.
