Abstract
In the process of writing, there are some difficulties faced by the students. Furthermore, they will make such kind of errors not only in vocabulary and spelling but also in grammar. Students’ errors are common and natural since it is impossible for second language learners to avoid erroneous in learning language skills. The researcher is eager to analyze students’ grammatical errors in writing narrative paragraph because most of students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang still have difficulties in constructing a good sentence in the paragraph. The purpose of the study is to describe the areas of grammatical errors that often made by fourth semester students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Malang in writing narrative paragraph. This study uses descriptive research design because there is no administration, or control of treatment. The population of the study is the fourth semester students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Malang who take writing II subject and the researcher takes 20% as the sample (242 x 20% = 48,40 or 48 students). The result of the study showed that there were 51 sentence fragments recognized from 27 compositions; 35 comma splices found in 21 compositions; 84 run-on or fused sentences that recognized from 40 students’ composition; and 1 dangling modifier that made by 1 student. Run- on or fused sentences reach the highest occurrence in this study. This kind of error is often made by the students in their writing. The conclusion taken from this study is that the area of grammatical errors which is often made by the students in writing narrative paragraph is run-on or fused sentence.
