Abstract

English is an international language and plays an important role in transferring science and technology. Based on Ministerial decree no 060/U/1993 the teaching of English can be introduced to the fourth grade students of the elementary school. In teaching English, especially vocabulary, the teacher should be creative in choosing the materials. It is not enough to mainly rely on the textbooks. The teacher needs to manipulate some teaching media to support the teaching learning process. The statement problem of this research is “what media are used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary in SDN Wonorejo I Lawang and what is the most dominant media used in teaching vocabulary?”. The purpose of this research is to investigate the teaching media used by teacher in teaching vocabulary at SDN Wonorejo I Lawang and describe the most dominat media used in teaching vocabulary. The research design that used in this study was descriptive research. Accessible population and sample of this study was only one English teacher at SDN Wonorejo I Lawang. The writer used two kinds of instrument to collect the data. They were interview and observation. The interview was given to the teacher. The observation was conducted to know the teaching English activities in the classroom. The result of this study showed that pictures were the most dominant media used in teaching vocabulary, because the students could enjoy and was interested in learning English through the concrete examples. Besides, picture was easy to find, prepare and inexpensive.
