Based on preliminary observation in a classroom, it was found that some teachers of English treated the exercises in the workbook as homework—though they did not check them— while others used them as the main materials in the classroom. Thus, an analysis of using workbook in the classroom is needed. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were in the form of teachers’ instruction and students’ activities during the teaching and learning reading comprehension using the workbook. To get the data the researcher used observation, interview, and questionnaire. The obtained data were then analyzed descriptively. The result of analysis of the exercises in the workbook shows that this workbook is monotonous. Its general outline remains the same in every unit. In the teaching of reading the teachers just followed the division of the reading activities in the workbook. Therefore, the pre-reading activities were monotonous and the post-reading was not really developed by the reading teachers. Moreover, the whilst-reading activity was only answering the reading questions; therefore it was not attractive. Because the workbook was only used in the classroom, the students had to make use of the workbook in the classroom. The students found that it was only useful in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. It is concluded that the exercises in the workbook are still far from satisfaction because only a few parts of the objectives mentioned in the GBPP are implemented in this workbook. Therefore, the exercises in the workbook need revision and improvement. And the reading teachers need to improve their way of using the workbook so that the students are able to get the most benefit from the exercises in the workbook. Another conclusion is that the workbook is not effective to make the students active and interested in studying English. However, at least the workbook can make the students active during the teaching of reading in the classroom. Finally, the workbook helps them not only to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skill, but also to enrich their vocabulary and master the grammar.
