Abstract
Background: Academic stress is stress related to learning activities, caused by demands placed on an individual during their academic period. The impact of academic stress on sleep is significant, as sleep is a basic human need for survival. This study aims to determine the relationship between academic stress and sleep quality among nursing students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.
Method: This study employed a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The research was conducted from May to October 2024. A sample of 247 respondents was selected from a population of 601, using stratified random sampling. The questionnaires used were the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) and the Academic Stress Scale (ASS). The statistical test used was Spearman's rank correlation with SPSS version 21.
Results: The results showed that some respondents experienced high academic stress (52%), the average sleep quality of students was poor (71%). The results of the test analysis obtained a significant value of α 0.001 < (0.05), which means that there is a significant relationship between academic stress and sleep quality of nursing students. The strength of the relationship between variables in this study showed very weak strength with a positive relationship direction (+) and a coefficient correlation value of 0.278, meaning that the higher the level of academic stress, the worse the sleep quality will be.
Conclusion: Nursing students who experience high levels of stress are more likely to have poor sleep quality.
