Abstract

In this study the writer is interested in analyzing the writing activities in the first year SMU English textbook based on the 2004 curriculum. In detail, this study attempted to answer the writing activities in English for SMA published by Grafindo Media Tama, the writing activities in Communicative and Interactive published by Yrama Wydia, the writing activities in Headlight l published by Erlangga,the most variety of writing activities among the three textbooks and the fewest variety of writing activities among the three textbooks, the writing activities in SMU based on the 2004 curriculum In analyzing the textbooks, the writer used descriptive design. The population of this study was all the English textbook for SMU of the first year based on the 2004 curriculum and the sample of this research were English for SMA published by Grafindo Media Pratama, Communicative and Interactive published by Yrama Wydia, Headlight l published by Erlangga. The instruments used were observation and documentation. The finding of this research shows that writing activities in English for SMA published by Grafindo Media Pratama are arranging the picture based on story, making correct order, discussing in small group, writing paragraph, giving capitalization and punctuation, matching the sentences to the correct picture, observing the cartoon and writing the questions. The writing activities in Communicative and Interactive published by Yrama Wydia were writing a resume and vitae, writing a written order of daily activity, making arrangement sentences into paragraph, writing previous daily activity, writing topic sentences of paragraph, completing the text, writing note, writing application letter, writing invitation and its reply, writing supporting sentences, making advertisement, writing anecdote, punctuating the text. The writing activities in Headlight l published by Erlangga are filling biodata, writing paragraph, giving conjunction, describing of someone, replying the message using sympathy expression, listing, completing the table, writing postcard, writing message, correcting punctuation, writing personal letter, answering question in written form, writing short article, dividing paragraph, making organized the sentences into paragraph, writing letter of invitation, writing process. Among the three textbooks, the Headlight l published by Erlangga has the most variety writing activities. Meanwhile, English for SMA published by Grafindo Media Pratama has the fewest activities of writing activities.
