Abstract

Basically, reading is thinking process and it is one of the four language skills which plays important role in the learners’ learning process. In fact, many learners have difficulties in reading comprehension. Thus, the learners have to use certain strategies to improve their comprehension in reading. Learning strategies is a specific action taken by the learner to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed and more transferable to new situation. The purpose of this study is to know kinds of learning strategies in reading comprehension class used by students and the most frequently used strategy in reading comprehension class used by students. This study used descriptive quantitative research design because it based on the data collection and analysis of numerical data. In collecting the data, the writer used questionnaire. The population of this study was the second year students of SMUN I Krian Sidoarjo in academic year 2006-2007. The total number of the population was 240 students. The sample of this study consists of 40 students which is class II IPA2 who randomly selected as the sample. Based on the result of the analysis, there was about 72% students used cognitive strategies. The second strategy was compensation strategies, about 65% students used this strategy. Meanwhile, 64% students used memory strategies. Then, 63% students used metacognitive strategies. The students used affective strategies about 59%. The lowest strategy used by the students was social strategies about 58%. Finally, the second year students of SMUN I Krian used various strategies to support their learning in reading. Almost all of the students realized the importance of learning strategy to improve their learning proficiency. They employ learning strategies that is appropriate with them.
