Abstract

The students make countless errors when they practice to use the target language (English), one of which is error in spelling. This misspelling happens because of the different system of spelling between the first language and the foreign language. That is why the writer of this thesis is interested in analyze the spelling errors and the most dominant spelling error made by the 3 rd year students at MAN Malang 2 Batu. The writer used descriptive quantitative design which was applied to obtain information concerning the students’ spelling errors and the most dominant spelling errors made by 3rd year students in English at MAN Malang 2 Batu.The population of this research was the 3 rd year of English class in MAN Malang 2. There was only one class that consist 25 students. Therefore, all population was used as a sample. The instruments were unstructured interview and document. Based on the result of the analysis of the data, it was found that there were 46 spelling errors which included omission, addition, misformation and blends. The spelling errors made by the students in omission were 17 (36, 95 %), errors of addition were 9 (19, 56 %), errors of misformation were 9 (19, 56 %).And the last errors were 11 of blends (23, 91). Based on those finding, it could be concluded that the most dominant spelling errors made by the 3rd year students at MAN Malang 2 Batu was in omission with the percentage 36, 95 %. Although the 3rd year students of English class at MAN 2 Batu have been studying English writing for 2 years, they still made 46 kinds of spelling errors. Therefore, the teacher should give more attention to the students’ weakness of spelling rules in their writing worksheets by selecting the appropriate material of spelling rules to be explained to the students, motivating the students to recheck the spelling in their writing every time they finish their English writing worksheets.
