Abstract

Nowadays, many students found English club as one of the several alternatives in improving their English. They used English club as their medium to improve their ability in English. One of the examples was International Language Forum (ILF). By joining English club, students would have more chances in speaking English than what they got in the classroom. This study was focused on the factors that make the students interested in joining English club at ILF of UMM. Thus, the purposes of this study were to know the factors that made students interested in joining English club at ILF and to get information about the most dominant factor that made students interested in joining ILF. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The sample of this study was 30 members of ILF from 20072008 period based on the criteria that they were the most active members in following the ILF’s programs. Simple random sampling was used to collect the data. The instrument used in this study was questionnaire. The findings showed that there were five factors which made the students interested in joining ILF English club. They were: 1) Out of 30 students, 23 students (76.7%) joined English club because they wanted to improve their English ability; 2) 18 students (60%) agreed that English club was important for them, because it gave them more chances in speaking English than what they got in the classroom and it gave them various English activities; 3) 13 students (43.3%) actually had an effort by being active in speaking English every time to follow English club; 4) 15 students (50%) practiced English with their friend in their spare time, so they joined English club because they liked doing activities toward English; 5) 17 students (56.7%) were interested in joining English club because of the programs conducted by English club. The most dominant factor that made the students interested in joining ILF English club concerned with their activities related to English in mastering the English ability and it closed to the capability.
