Reading is a very important life activities to develop intelligence in modern life. Reading is fundamental knowledge acquisition. Reading means studying the written works of experts in their fields. Without studying the idea or ideas of others will lead to his own view is blurred. Reading is a critical process-creative reading done in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of Bacan it, and an assessment of the condition, value, function, and the impact of reading it. To obtain pngetahuan of material in the form of books, of course, read the students' skills and abilities are needed. Students who are skilled in reading, with easy to comprehend and understand the contents of the book. There are still many students who have not found skilled reading. This is due to lack of interest still getting used to reading books and they are still a lot to read by rote without understanding the purpose of reading. Planting the habit of reading with explicit and implicit understanding of the necessity of teachers. Many aspects that determine the content of reading comprehension, one of which is the aspect of reading habits. The population of this study is the third-grade students IPA SMAN Paiton Probolinggo 2005-2006, totaling 60 students. The sample is a class III student IPA 2 of 33 students. Data collection techniques in the form of questionnaires and tests. Data obtained form the results of this research is to answer the objective test and questionnaire answers. The instrument used is a matter of test. The data analysis technique is obtained by using point biserial correlation. The method in this study was descriptive correlational. The results of this study indicate that a significant relationship between the habit of reading with the ability to understand the content of discourse, until the habit of reading with the ability to understand the content of the discourse of 0.55. Based on this fact can be seen that the correlation coefficient between the habit of reading with students' ability to understand the content of the discourse of class III SMA I Paiton Probolinggo in 2005-2006 when confirmed with very high r criticism. From the calculation results obtained information that the relationship of reading with the ability to understand the content of the discourse of class III student exposition IPA SMAN Paiton Probolinggo high value in 2005-2006. This proves that the occurrence of the habit of reading great influence on understanding the content of discourse.
