This research was done in July 7th – August 20th 2007 in Pagar Batu Village of Saronggi Subdistrict of Sumenep Regency-Madura, East Java. The objective of this research was to know the influence of various planting space to the growth of seaweed Eucheuma cottonii using base free and floating raft method and the usefulness of that was to give benefit in seaweed cultivation effort and information about the optimal growth of seaweed and also be useful in developing effort of seaweed cultivation. This research used experimental method with Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 repetitions. The treatment used was planting space of 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm. The supporting parameters observed are brightness, stream flow speed, temperature, pH, and salinity. The result of this research showed that the various planting space using base free and floating raft method was very significant to the growth of seaweed Eucheuma cottonii. The highest Absolute growth of seaweed Eucheuma cottonii using base free and floating raft method was at planting space of 25 cm with each average 157 grams and 267,34 grams respectively whereas the least growth of seaweed Eucheuma cottonii using base free and floating raft method was at planting space of 10 cm with each average 98,03 grams and 134,72 grams respectively. The water quality measured during this research involved brightness about 200 cm – 350 cm, stream flow speed 26 – 30 cm/second, temperature 27 – 29 oC, pH 7 – 8 and salinity 30 – 33 per mile. The conclusion of this research was the treatment of various planting space using base free and floating raft method influenced the growth of seaweed Eucheuma cottonii. And based on the result of this research could be suggested to use planting space more than 25 cm and used floating raft method , since at the planting space and cultivation method yielded the maximal seaweed growth.
