Abstract

The phenomenon of illegal street racing refers to deviant behavior among adolescents who engage in street racing on public roads, which has an impact on social norms, formal laws, and the stability of society. With this in mind, this research aims to understand why adolescents become street racing jockeys and the root causes of illegal street racing still occurring on Jenggolo Road in Sidoarjo District from a perspective of social pathology. Furthermore, this research also depicts that street racing behavior can be identified as social pathology. This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive type, and the researcher selects subjects using purposive sampling techniques. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study explain: (1) Subjects have reasons for their involvement in becoming street racing jockeys, which include personal desires and peer influence. (2) Subjects claim that the causes of illegal street racing still being prevalent on Jenggolo road are due to environmental influence, economic issues, an inability to internalize values and norms, as well as the influence of technology. (3) Subjects acknowledge that street racing behavior is harmful to society and can be identified as social pathology.
