Abstract
Abstract. This study aims to examine the relationship between family functioning and self-esteem among students living away from home. These students face various challenges that can affect their self-esteem. Family functioning is viewed as one of the key factors involved in the development and maintenance of self-esteem. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study sample consisted of 401 out-of-town college students selected using convenience sampling. Data collection utilized the General Functioning (GF-12) scale to assess family functioning and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) to measure self-esteem. Data analysis was performed using JAMOVI. The results indicate a positive and significant relationship between family functioning and self-esteem among out-of-state students (r = 0.342; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that the higher the level of family functioning perceived by out-of-state students, the higher their self-esteem. Conversely, the lower the family functioning, the lower the students’ self-esteem. These findings indicate that family functioning plays a crucial role in supporting the psychological development of students living away from home, particularly in fostering positive self-esteem.
