Abstract
Loneliness is an unpleasant emotional state resulting from a mismatch between an individual’s expected social relationship and their actual social relationship. College students living away from home are a group of individual’s vulnerable to feelings of loneliness due to the many demands of adapting to a new environment. This study aims to determine the influence of family functioning on loneliness among college students living away from home. The research method used a quantitative approach with a simple linear regression design. The subjects in this study consisted of 402 collage students living away from home, selected through convenience sampling. The instruments used were the General Functioning (GF-12) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3. The results of this study indicate that family functioning has a significant influence on loneliness, as evidenced by a p-value <.001(p<0.05), and family functioning contributes 13.7% to loneliness (R = 0.370; R2 = 0.137), while the remaining 86.3% is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study, such as self-esteem, interpersonal behavior, personality, and peer support. These findings underscore the importance of the family’s role in providing emotional support, effective communication, and positive engagement to reduce feelings of loneliness among students living away from home.
