Abstract

Adolescent mental health is an important issue in developmental psychology, as adolescence is a critical period characterized by increased vulnerability to psychological stress, particularly within school environments that play a key role in shaping students’ well-being. This study aims to develop and analyze the School Mental Health Index (IKMS) among students of SMAN 16 Surabaya based on five dimensions, namely student well-being, social relationships, sense of safety, academic resilience, and school policies and facilities. A cross-sectional design with a mixed-method approach was employed involving 358 students. Quantitative data were collected using standardized instruments adapted from the Student Subjective Well-Being Questionnaire, NIH Toolbox Pediatric Social Relationship Scales, Child Adolescent Bullying Scale, Resilience at Secondary School Scale, and Multidimensional School Climate Scale (PACE-33), while qualitative data were obtained through interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The findings show that the IKMS score is 73.85, categorized as high. The dimensions of sense of safety, student well-being, and social relationships show relatively high scores, followed by academic resilience, as well as school policies and facilities. Overall, the results indicate that students’ mental health is in good condition, shaped by the interaction of multiple interrelated dimensions. Therefore, schools play an important role in maintaining this condition through policy support, strengthened services, and the creation of a safe and supportive learning environment.
