Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of implementing Project Based Learning (PjBL) on improving mathematical conceptual understanding of the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Three Variables (SLETV) among tenth-grade students at a Vocational High School. This research is motivated by students' low level of mathematical conceptual understanding, which remains oriented toward procedural problem-solving, thus requiring a learning model capable of providing meaningful learning experiences through students' active engagement in completing contextual projects. This study employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 20 tenth-grade students at a Vocational High School. The research instruments included a Project Based Learning implementation questionnaire, a mathematical conceptual understanding test in the form of a pre-test and post-test, and a teaching module that had been validated by experts. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, Normalized Gain (N-Gain) calculation, Pearson Product Moment correlation test, and coefficient of determination. The results showed that the implementation of Project Based Learning fell into the good category, with an average percentage of 79.93%. The average pre-test score was 44.17, which increased to 95.62 in the post-test, with an average N-Gain of 0.91, classified as high. The Pearson Product Moment correlation test yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.46, indicating a positive relationship of moderate strength between the implementation of Project Based Learning and the improvement of students' mathematical conceptual understanding. The coefficient of determination of 21.16% indicates that the implementation of Project Based Learning contributed 21.16% to the improvement in mathematical conceptual understanding, while the remaining 78.84% was influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. Thus, the implementation of Project Based Learning made a positive contribution to improving mathematical conceptual understanding of the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Three Variables (SLETV) and can serve as an alternative mathematics learning model.
