Abstract
This study examines the growing phenomenon of digital technology penetration and its subsequent impact on the character development of elementary school children, focusing specifically on the speaking etiquette of fifth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 1 Panarukan, Situbondo, East Java. The rapid advancement of gadgets in the 21st century has significantly shifted children's socialization spaces, often introducing informal, casual, and sometimes impolite verbal communication patterns observed on digital platforms into real-world interactions. This research aims to empirically map the influence of gadget usage and the types of digital content accessed by students, as well as to formulate applicable mitigation strategies for educators and parents based on Islamic communication ethics. Methodologically, this study is a qualitative field research utilizing a purposive sampling approach. Data were gathered from fifth-grade students (classes VA and VB), homeroom teachers, and parents through structured observations, continuous interviews, and documentation analysis of students' verbal behaviors. Theoretically, the study employs a multidisciplinary framework, synthesizing Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory and Lev Vygotsky's Socio-Cognitive Development Theory with the systematic concepts of communication (qaulan) outlined in the Al-Qur'an. The findings indicate that while structured and supervised gadget usage holds positive potential for linguistic expansion, unfiltered and unmonitored digital exposure leads to a notable degradation of verbal character. This degradation manifests as a reduction in face-to-face interaction quality, a loss of situational linguistic sensitivity, and a tendency to neglect traditional and Islamic principles of respectful speech (al-akhlak al-karimah) when interacting with parents and teachers. To counter these destructive shifts, this monograph synthesizes Qur'anic communication pillars including qaulān karīmā (noble speech), qaulān layyinā (gentle speech), and qaulān sadīdā (truthful speech) as active filters . Ultimately, the study delivers a comprehensive, values-driven formulation of counter-strategies designed to help educational institutions and families restore disciplined communication ethics and safeguard children's character in the digital era.
