Abstract
Abstract
This research aimed to explain the implementation of the English language program, explore students' perceptions toward the program, and identify its benefits and challenges in improving students' speaking skills at SMP Muhammadiyah Al-Furqan Islamic Boarding School. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The participants consisted of the principal, English teachers, language committee members, and twelve students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the English language program was systematically implemented through daily vocabulary enrichment, weekly conversation (muhadatsah), and weekly speech (muhadharah) activities, supported by teachers, language committee members, school regulations, and an English-speaking environment. Students generally had positive perceptions of the program because it provided meaningful opportunities to practice English in authentic communication. The program improved students' vocabulary mastery, speaking fluency, pronunciation, confidence, public speaking ability, and English-speaking habits. However, students also encountered several challenges, including limited vocabulary, grammatical and pronunciation difficulties, speaking anxiety, and fear of making mistakes. The study concludes that the English language program effectively supports students' speaking development through continuous communicative practice and a supportive learning environment. Therefore, strengthening vocabulary instruction and maintaining interactive speaking activities are recommended to maximize students' speaking skills.
