Abstract

The diversity of students' cultural backgrounds within the university environment creates complex intercultural communication dynamics, particularly for migrant students. This study aims to identify the application of Young Yun Kim's intercultural communication model among students from Kalimantan at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (FISIP UMM). This model refers to the stress-adaptation-growth concept, which views cross-cultural adaptation as a dynamic and continuous process centered on communication as its main pillar. This study employs a descriptive quantitative approach using a survey method, with a sample of 210 respondents consisting of FISIP UMM students originating from Kalimantan. Data were collected using a binomial questionnaire measuring four dimensions: intercultural communication frequency, challenges and stress, communication adaptation strategies, and development in intercultural adaptation. The results show that the intercultural communication frequency dimension falls into the high category, the challenges and stress dimension falls into the moderate category, the communication adaptation strategies dimension falls into the high category, and the development in intercultural adaptation dimension falls into the high category. Overall, the application of Young Yun Kim's intercultural communication model by students from Kalimantan at FISIP UMM proceeds positively and actively, demonstrating a gradual adaptation process toward a more inclusive intercultural identity development.
