Abstract
Psychological well-being is an important aspect in improving workers’ performance and quality of life. However, among gig economy workers in the app-based transportation sector, this condition remains suboptimal due to distinctive job demands, such as algorithmic pressure and income uncertainty. This study aims to analyze the effect of job demands on psychological well-being among these workers. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 332 gig economy workers (motorcycle taxi drivers, taxi drivers, and couriers) in Malang City, selected using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using the Job Demands-Resources Questionnaire (α = 0.75) and the Indonesian version of Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale (α = 0.70), and were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results indicate that job demands have a significant and positive effect on psychological well-being (p < 0.001), with the mean scores of job demands (M = 65.61) and psychological well-being (M = 43.39). These findings suggest that job demands are significantly associated with workers’ psychological well-being. Therefore, the adaptive management of job demands, the enhancement of personal resources, and supportive work environments are necessary to improve the psychological well-being of gig economy workers.
