Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model in enhancing self-awareness and environmental concern among adolescents at SMP Muhammadiyah 13 Surabaya. Developing these life skills is essential to encourage students to become more responsible for themselves and their enviroment through meaningful and project-oriented learning experiences.
The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The research subjects consisted of 62 seventh-grade students divided into an experimental class and a control class. The research instruments consisted of questionnaires on self-awareness and environmental concern using a 4-point Likert scale. Instrument validity was tested using content validity via Aiken’s V and empirical validity using Pearson’s correlation, while reliability was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha. Data analysis techniques included descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity tests, paired-sample t-tests, and independent-sample t-tests.
The findings indicate that the research instruments were valid and reliable, with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.869. The paired-sample t-test for the experimental group showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant improvement between the pretest and posttest scores after the implementation of PjBL. Furthermore, the independent-samples t-test also produced a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), demonstrating a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. These findings suggest that the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model is effective in improving adolescents' self-awareness and environmental concern.
