Abstract
Work motivation is an important factor in determining employee performance and productivity, particularly among millennials who have strong needs for collaboration, engagement, and social relationships in the workplace. However, existing evidence indicates that the level of work motivation and employee engagement among millennials is still not optimal. One factor that is presumed to influence work motivation is team cohesion, defined as the level of attachment and togetherness among members within a work group. This study aims to examine the effect of team cohesion on work motivation among millennial employees. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 257 millennial employees working in teams, selected using quota sampling technique. The instruments used were the Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (WEIMS) to measure work motivation and the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) to measure team cohesion. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression with a bootstrap approach. The results showed that team cohesion has a positive and significant effect on work motivation among millennial employees (β = 0.578; p < 0.001). This finding indicates that higher team cohesion is associated with higher work motivation. Therefore, team cohesion is an important factor that organizations should consider in order to enhance millennial employees’ work motivation.
