Abstract

Life satisfaction is an individual's cognitive evaluation of the life they have as a whole by comparing current conditions with the standard conditions they determine. The life satisfaction of mothers who work as teachers is affected by their efforts to fulfil their roles as wives and mothers in the family, also as educators who are responsible for providing good quality education for their students. The work-family conflict that is experienced when playing both roles can increase the level of job stress that the individuals have. In the same time, work-family conflict and job stress are associated with low levels of life satisfaction. This study aims to analyse the mediating effect of job stress in work-family conflict on the life satisfaction of mothers who work as teachers. A total of 192 working women have been obtained as research subjects with the criteria of working as a teacher and having children under 12 years old. The scales used in this study are; Work-Family Conflict Scale (WFCS), The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Job Stress Scale (JSS). Mediation analysis were conducted using Process model 4 by Hayes. The results showed that work–family conflict directly had a significant negative effect on life satisfaction of β = -0.086 ; ρ = 0.00. The results of this study also prove that work stress is able to partially mediate the effect of work–family conflict on life satisfaction through the mediation of work stress with a coefficient value of β = -0.118 ; ρ = 0.00.
