Pola Komunikasi Interpersonal Antarbudaya Multietnis: Studi pada Mahasiswa Perantau di Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang

This research is driven by the cultural diversity in the university environment, especially among out-of-town students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang who come from various regions in Indonesia. Differences in language, norms, and communication styles can potentially cause miscommunication in interpersonal interactions. The study uses the Anxiety/Uncertainty Management (AUM) Theory developed by William B. Gudykunst to understand how students manage feelings of anxiety and uncertainty during intercultural interpersonal communication. This theory explains that communication effectiveness is influenced by an individual's ability to adapt, build openness, reduce uncertainty, and understand the communication behaviors of people from different cultural backgrounds. This study aims to examine intercultural interpersonal communication patterns in interactions among multi-ethnic students. . The approach used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The research instruments consist of semi-structured interview guidelines and observation sheets, with informants selected using purposive sampling.
The results show that patterns of intercultural interpersonal communication are formed through the processes of perception, self-adjustment, changes in communication behavior, and openness. Initial perception is influenced by differences in language and communication styles, which can potentially lead to misunderstandings. Self-adjustment is carried out through the use of Indonesian, accent reduction, and the use of nonverbal communication. Changes in communication behavior are marked by increased caution in speaking, listening skills, and empathy. Meanwhile, openness develops along with closer interpersonal relationships and plays a role in building trust and intercultural understanding..
