Abstract

Background : Butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) contain active
compounds with flavonoids, saponins, and anthocyanins, which have antibacterial activity. These compounds are used in the development of topical formulations, like as body washes. Liquid soap is widely used by the public because it is practical and economical, and produces a soft, comfortable lather.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of butterfly pea flower extract (Clitoria ternatea L.) in liquid soap formulations on the inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacterial growth.
Methods : Antibacterial testing of liquid soap made with butterfly pea flower extract at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% against the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis was performed using the well diffusion method.
Results and Conclusions: The results indicated that increasing the concentration of butterfly pea flower extract influenced the antibacterial activity of the liquid bath soap formulation. The average diameter of the inhibition zone (the clear area surrounding the sample) was measured at 11.21 mm for F0, 12.63 mm for F1, and 13.65 mm for F2 and F3. In comparison, the positive control exhibited an average inhibition zone of 16.62 mm.
