Abstract

Final-year students often experience a decline in sleep quality due to academic stress, heavy workloads, and thesis writing. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a relaxation technique that has been proven to help reduce physical and psychological tension. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Progressive Muscle Relaxation on the sleep quality of final-year physiotherapy students at Muhammadiyah University Malang. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one group pre-test post-test approach. The sample consisted of 17 final year students selected through purposive sampling. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data analysis included the Shapiro–Wilk test and paired t-test. The results showed that the mean PSQI score before the intervention was 13.65 ± 2.99 and decreased to 8.24 ± 3.90 after the intervention. The paired t-test showed a p-value < 0.001, indicating a significant improvement in sleep quality after PMR administration. PMR was effective in improving the sleep quality of final-year physiotherapy students.
