Abstract

Toxic positivity is the tendency to reject negative emotions and demands individuals to always think positively. This can emerge in religious communication through calls for patience, gratitude, and worship without considering emotional conditions. This study aims to describe the forms of toxic positivity in religious communication in the Sedekah Subuh Community, Dinoyo, Malang, using a qualitative case study approach through interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis uses Ethnographic Communication Theory and the concept of toxic positivity to understand interaction patterns. The results show that several aspects such as rejection of negative emotions, encouragement of positive thinking, and instant solutions do emerge, but they reflect religious and cultural values that reinforce each other, rather than pressure. Meanwhile, minimal empathy and pressure to always appear strong are not found, because communication within the community is supportive and full of empathy. Thus, religious communication in this community reflects solidarity and emotional support more than the oppressive practice of toxic positivity.
