Abstract

This research was conducted due to changes in the number of ethnic groups in Central Tarakan District, which have an impact on the continued existence of Tidung culture as a local culture. The research problems include the form of cultural identity held by the Tidung community, the level and manner in which the community is involved in civic activities, and the factors that support or hinder community involvement in these activities. This research aims to examine these three aspects in a society with many ethnic groups. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation involving traditional leaders, community leaders, as well as the Tidung community and various ethnic groups. The results of the study indicate that the cultural identity of the Tidung people still exists despite experiencing changes due to the influence of modernization. Community participation in social activities is quite good and open to all, but is not evenly distributed, especially among the younger generation. Supporting factors include cultural values, the role of family and traditional leaders, and balanced social relationships, while inhibiting factors are the influence of modernization and the declining interest of the younger generation. These findings indicate that the Tidung cultural identity continues to change and plays a role in supporting community participation, despite differences.
